Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore Rural District, N. Kannan on Sunday announced that wearing of helmets and seat belts will be compulsory in Coimbatore Rural District.
Also, the use of mobile phones while driving will not be allowed.
The announcement came in the wake of an accident involving two motorcycles where one of the riders, wearing a helmet, had managed to escape without injuries while the other rider, without a helmet, had got hurt.
Drives were being conducted to control over speeding and ensure road safety.
Two wheeler riders and car drivers who did not comply with the helmet and seat belt rules would be charged Rs.100 and Rs.50 respectively.
