Air Force Plane with 29 people on board missing

New Delhi,Jul 22: An Indian Air Force (IAF) plane with 29 people on board has gone missing over the Bay of Bengal surrounded by inclement weather.

The Russian-made AN-32 aircraft took off from Tambaram, Chennai at 7:30 AM and was en route to Port Blair. The plane had last contact with Air Traffic Control at 7:46 AM and was last seen on radar at 8:12 AM said by officials.

The aircraft was carrying service personnel to the strategic islands near the Malacca Straits, where India has a military base.

A search operation has been launched by the air force, Navy and Coast Guard.

Indian Navy has sent in four vessels Karmukh, Gharial, Jyoti and Kuthar to carry out search and rescue operations.

There are more than 100 AN-32s in service with the IAF. It is an aircraft that can fly for up to four hours without refueling.
