"It's going to be a huge moment for Hashim to play in his 50th Test but I know it will not unnerve him," Smith told the Afrikaans daily Beeld on Friday.
Hasim Amla has played 49 test matches so far scoring 3,787 runs at an average of 46.75
"His discipline and ability to stay calm under pressure is exactly what makes him such a fantastic player," said Smith.
"I believe (Amla) will end his dream year with a bang. To have him in the team is an incredible privilege because he was, especially in 2010, at the forefront of our success."
"He established himself as one of the leading players in the world," the captain said.
Amla scored 1,200 Test runs in 2010, while hit 1,058 in the one-day format.
Smith said Indians will come back strongly to try and win to square the series,. "It's such a big advantage to win the first Test so convincingly, but India will come back strongly," said Smith.
